Pallet Wood Kindling: Eco-Friendly Warmth for Your Home

Introduction

“Is pallet wood an effective kindling choice?” This question is gaining importance among environmentally conscious individuals. Let’s explore how heat-treated pallet wood, particularly from pine, offers a superior, safe, and sustainable alternative for kindling.

Understanding Pallet Wood

The Versatility of Pallet Wood

Pallet wood has revolutionised the way we approach sustainable fire-starting. This durable material, commonly made from pine, offers high resin content and quick ignition, making it an efficient kindling choice.

The Science Behind Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is vital for safe kindling from pallets. This process eliminates pests and harmful substances, making pallet wood safe for burning. There are other treatments pallets can go through such as chemical treatments but we only use heat-treated pallets in our kindling.

Pine Wood: The Superior Kindling Material

Quick Ignition: The Pine Advantage

Pine stands out for its rapid ignition, thanks to its high resin content. Its natural accelerants make starting a fire easy and efficient and also makes the wood burn hot,  just the right attributes you want from kindling. All of this is only possible with dry wood and we consistantly and only supply wood that has a moisture content of 20% or below.

Pine's Environmental and Practical Benefits

Pine is not only a fast-growing, sustainable resource but also adds a pleasant aroma to fires. A well managed pine forest can supply wood not only for now but for generations to come.

Making A Positive Impact

Sustainability in Every Spark

By choosing this kindling, you’re contributing to a greener planet. This choice supports recycling efforts, reduces tree harvesting, and minimizes carbon emissions associated with fresh timber.

Practical Insights into Pallet Wood Kindling

How to Store and Handle Our Kindling

Proper storage is crucial. Keep your kindling dry and sheltered to maintain its fire-starting properties. Our pallets arrive to use directly from the businesses supplying us which are stored their end within their premises. When it arrives with us they get transferred to our purpose built drying area where they are processed from pallets to kindling, put into our eco-friendly mushroom crate packagaing which is perfect to stack for further drying until such a time as we have measured moisture at below 20%. Even when delivered to you, the kindling can continue to reduce in moisture content if managed carefully. Bringing them indoors a few days before use will also help.

Moisture Content
A graph showing how moisture content determines heat output

The graph above shows how fresh green logs only have half the energy content of a seasoned log and the same is true for kindling. To be further energy conscious, our kindling is dried naturally in wind and sun rather than through the use of energy-intensive kilns.

Pallet Wood vs. Traditional Kindling: The Clear Winner

Pallet wood kindling outperforms traditional kindling in ignition speed, heat and sustainability. With a monitored moisture content the kindling burns with virtually no smoke and without leaving residue on your glass or flues.
